Carbinite Metal Coatings Provides Textured Coatings to Increase Grip and Wear Resistance

Renfrew, PA (PRWEB) - Slip problems are common on metal parts, particularly in the workholding industry. Collets, mandrels, clamps, jaws, as well as other fixturing and dies, often lack the required coefficient of friction to grip or hold parts during the manufacturing process. Carbinite is especially applicable when gripping softer materials such as plastics, brass and thin-walled tubing where simply squeezing harder is not an option. In addition, Carbinite is also useful for gripping work hardened materials where the maximum clamping force is still inadequate. Rapid stock removal, heavy milling cuts, worn workholding, limited gripping surfaces, and oily environments can worsen the slipping condition. Finding a solution to increase grip can reduce costly downtime and scrap, as well as allow for increased feed rates and productivity.

Carbinite has recently made improvements to the coating process to enable more cost effective coatings for new applications, high volumes and larger surface areas. Carbinite's President, Robert Freyvogel states, "Improvements to our coating machine technology now allows some coatings to be applied up to 12 times faster. In addition, new automation technology allows for faster throughput with the highest levels of consistency between parts." This has led Carbinite’s coatings into new applications such as coil processing equipment in steel and aluminum mills and high volume OEM applications.

Carbinite’s unique textured coatings provide a permanent solution to stop slip problems. In fact, studies show that workholding with Carbinite’s coatings applied requires 95% more force to move parts in a workholding fixture. In addition to increasing gripping power, Carbinite’s coatings also decrease tool wear, adding a layer of tungsten carbide that increases surface hardness up to 72 Rc.

“Our coatings are applied with a proprietary electro-spark deposition process which deposits tungsten carbide to the base material to an appropriate build up and emery. The coatings can also be re-applied without further build up if wear does occur over time,” says Freyvogel. Carbinite’s coatings have significant benefits over traditional flame/thermal spray or HVOF coatings, since Carbinite’s coatings have superior bond strength and will not chip, crack, or peel. In addition, Carbinite’s process allows coating to be applied to specific, defined areas without risk of overspray.
